Wild Animal Park San Diego

Wild Animal Park San Diego, otherwise known as Safari Park, is located on 1800 acres in Escondido, in North San Diego County. It's about a 35 mile drive from the San Diego Zoo.

The park is open all 365 days of the year from 9 am until 5, 6 or 7pm, depending on the season.

There are various shops, food stands and restaurants throughout the park.

Parking costs $10, or $15 for RVs. It's cheaper if you are a zoo member.

Over 3500 animals and over 400 species live at this wildlife sanctuary.

Areas of the Wild Animal Park San Diego which feature different types of animals to observe include Lorikeet Landing, Nairobi Village, Condor Ridge, an aviary, the Hidden Jungle tropical greenhouse, an elephant overlook, the Heart of Africa area, and the lion camp.

Animal Encounters is an interactive animal show with trainers. There's also a bird show, a cheetah show and an interactive digital zebra show. Check the Safari Park website for details and times.

Fun things to see and do at the Safari Park include:

• taking the Africa Tram Safari, which is a guided tour that takes you to see the different exhibits
• feeding the lorikeets at Lorikeet Landing
• watch the elephants eat treats (11:30 am)
• take the kids for a ride on the Conservation Carousel
• let the kids play at the educational Discovery Station
• visit the Jameson Research Island, learn about the animals and play the interactive water games
• Pet deer and sheep in the Petting Kraal

For one day, it's $40 for the Africa Tram Safari and $30 for children age 3 to 11. For $76, an adult can get a pass for 2 days at the San Diego Zoo, or the Wild Animal Park, or one of each.

Active military can get a free one day pass to the zoo and also the Safari Park.
