Past Southern California
Beach Events

This is the archived listing of past Southern California beach events and festivals, mostly annual. For future and upcoming events, please visit our Blog and Updates page.

The Latest In Sun Protection

Fall may be here, but those UV rays can still do damage. Pack a hat, a good sunblock and a rash guard shirt before you head for the beach.

The FDA has recently approved a new product called Anthelios SX, which contains the ingredient Mexoryl (long available in Canada). Studies show that this ingredient protects you from UVA rays better than any other. Most sunscreens only block the UVB rays.

And if you'll be swimming at the beach, lake, river or pool, rather than slather your shoulders and back with lotion, it's simpler to put on a quick drying rash guard shirt.

Santa Barbara Sandcastle Festival

Whether you like to play in the sand and make your own castles or view others' amazing creations, the Santa Barbara Sandcastle Festival should be a load of fun.

On September 16, 2006 at East Beach, corporations, families, clubs, nonprofit organizations kids and friends will compete for the trophies. Additional fun includes a surf-a-duck race, surf music, hula dancing, a sandcastle making workshop and much more.

The 2006 Lido Yacht Expo

If you're a yachting enthusiast, be sure to head out to Lido Village in Newport Beach between September 7-10 for the 28th Annual Lido Yacht Expo.

There will be approximately 250 brand new luxurious yachts on display from around the world. Some of the amenities on these models are simply jaw dropping.

If you want to avoid the traffic and parking hassle of the area, park for free at the Newport Technology Center at 500 Superior Avenue and take the free shuttle, which departs every 15 minutes. Ocean Festival in San Clemente

For a rousing good time at the beach, join in the fun at the San Clemente Ocean Festival. On July 15th and 16th, there will be activities all day, starting off with a city lifeguard pancake breakfast. There will be an exhibition of Woodies, fishing derbies, an Ocean art show, and a special children's pavilion.

There will be exciting surf competitions and body surfing and body boarding clinics. Don't miss the great rubber ducky race or the team sand sculpture contest. After dark on Saturday, there will be a live band and family beach barbecue party.

Doheny State Beach Event

Tons of fun is scheduled on the beach for Saturday, June 24 at Doheny in Southern California. There will be the annual Menehune surfing contest for kids, a fishing demo, cake contest, butterfly and native garden walk, whale walk and more.

Various exhibits around the park will showcase the park's history, including surf history, ranger history and lifeguard history. There will be a Plein Aire art exhibit, photography exhibit, and vintage surfboard and Woodies exhibits. Surf music will add to the atmosphere, while a food, beer and wine court will keep people fortified.

International Surfing Day

The second annual International Surfing Day will be held June 21st, 2006. As this is also the summer solstice, it is the longest day of the year. Worldwide, surfers will be celebrating by doing what they love most of course. Surfing Magazine and the Surfrider Foundation are joining up to organize this event, which will involve voluntary beach cleanups.

The Southern California beaches which will be officially participating include Manhattan Beach, Venice Beach, Newport Beach at the Santa Ana River mouth and at Balboa Pier, Salt Creek in Laguna Beach, San Onofre in San Clemente, Mission Beach/Belmont Park in San Diego, and at Ocean Beach Pier in San Diego. What a great way to kick off the summer surf season!

Long Beach Sea Festival

There's no shortage of summer fun in Long Beach California. The annual Sea Festival has events going on all summer, including a kite flying championship, a crawfish festival, a tiki and Polynesian festival and a water skiing race to Catalina.

There will be moonlight movies on the beach and a great sand castle contest. A wooden boat regatta and a dragon boat festival will be exciting to watch, as well as a power boat race and a sailing festival.

Most of the events are free to the public.
