San Diego Accommodation Guide

There is a multitude of San Diego accommodation options, from full fledged resorts on Mission Bay to motels right on Pacific Beach, to bed and breakfast inns in the Gas Lamp quarter, or high rise hotels downtown by the harbor.

Other areas where there is a large concentration of hotels include: Downtown, Old Town, Hotel Circle, Balboa Park, and Point Loma/Harbor Island/Shelter Island/Airport. La Jolla and Coronado are other great places to stay on a Southern California beach vacation.

You'll find links to pages with hotel listings to each of these areas after the descriptions below.

The first is the Mission Bay and Pacific Beach area. Primarily, beach vacationers are interested in this area for its proximity to the water.

The second area of San Diego accommodation is in the downtown area. This is where the Amtrak station is, the Convention Center, the Gas Lamp Quarter, the Maritime Museum and Seaport Village.

Thirdly, there is the Mission Valley/Old town Area. Most of these hotels are either on Hotel Circle or in Old Town San Diego itself.

Hotel Circle is just what it sounds like, a huge circle of hotels with the Interstate 8 freeway running right through the middle. It is very convenient to quick freeway access, a fairly short drive to the beaches and Sea World, and Qualcomm Stadium is very close. Many of these hotels offer free shuttle service to nearby Old Town with its colorful Mexican shops, restaurants and plazas.

The next area of San Diego lodging is the Balboa Park area. These hotels are conveniently close to the San Diego Zoo and all the museums and Botanical Garden in the park itself.

Another San Diego lodging area where there is a concentration of hotels is the Point Loma/Shelter Island/Harbor Island/Airport area, south of Mission Beach and close to the airport. The hotels on the two islands are in a lovely harbor view location along boat marinas (if you don’t mind the low flying planes).

There's a beautiful beach on Coronado with lots of boating opportunities on the bay side as well.

Or, if you prefer the charm of a San Diego bed and breakfast, there are several in the Balboa Park area.
