The Rash Guard Shirt

The best thing about the rash guard shirt is that it provides protection from the sun so that you can enjoy more time in the sun and water without having to constantly reapply sunscreen to the back and shoulders. Of course, you still need to protect your face and other exposed areas with sunblock and/or hats, but it is much easier to apply it to those areas than the back.

Whether you swim, dive, surf, snorkel, kayak, wakeboard, skim board, body board, water ski, wind surf or just plain play in the sun and surf, a rash guard can help protect your skin from cumulative sun damage, which may not show up for years.

No matter if you are at the beach, the river, a lake or a pool; the sun's rays reflect off the water, making you burn faster. Rashguards (as they are also called), also help prevent the chafing rashes that can occur from doing watersports.

Children, with their tender young skin are especially vulnerable. They love to play in the sand at the water's edge as long as they can. They tend to like to go in and out of the water a lot, and even waterproof sunscreen needs to be constantly reapplied, which isn't easy to do when they are sandy, wet, or both!

A rash guard swim shirt is also beneficial to those with sensitive skin who can't or don't like to wear suntan lotion. Many think that white teeshirts over your swim suit protects you, but not so much, especially when wet. Plus, the teeshirt gets soggy and baggy when wet, whereas the lightweight rashguard stays sleek, dries fast and is more comfortable. Most importantly, it provides much more UV protection.

TYPES OF RASH GUARD SHIRTS

Also known as rashguards, surf shirts and swim shirts, the rash guard shirt comes in short sleeves or long sleeves. You can get them for men, women and children. They come in different colors, mostly solid or two tone. Some come in print designs.

When shopping for a rash guard shirt, check its UPF or ultra violet protection rating. It should fit fairly snugly. If it is too large, it reduces the UV protection.

SHOPPING FOR RASHGUARDS

Local sporting goods shops may or may not have a selection of rashguards to try on. Beach and surf shops usually have them also.

For the most variety, shop online at one of the many stores that carry the rash guard shirt. (See the fun eBay box above)

PROTECT YOURSELF

The best thing to do is to limit your sun exposure between the hours of 10 and 4. Stay in the shade or under an umbrella or wide brimmed hat whenever possible. Don't forget sunglasses, lip block and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, reapplied every two hours.

Protective clothing (out of the water) should be dark colored with a tight weave. Even waterproof sunblock tends to wear off from sweat and water play, so you should reapply it every 2 hours.

If you come prepared, your beach vacation will be memorable and enjoyable. Don't get burned!
