Del Mar Vacation

An Upscale Seaside Village Atmosphere
(plus a racetrack)

Del Mar Beach

Del Mar is up the coast from San Diego in what is known as North County. La Jolla is to the south, and Solana Beach is to the north. It is well known for the race track, which draws huge crowds every summer.

The Beach
This beach's southern end is narrow, and on the other side of the railroad tracks where the Coaster shoots through, there's a long, grassy park (Seagrove Park) with benches, paths and a little playground. A bike path lines the beach as well. There is good swimming and body surfing.

Further north, starting around 15th Street, the sandy beach gets wider. At this end, you'll find all the usual beach amenities such as bathrooms, showers and a snackbar.

DelMar Plaza
This shopping area is a well designed outdoor mall with three levels. There are places to eat, upscale boutiques to shop in and it's generally a pleasant place to walk around, enjoying the ocean views.

There's also an outdoor patio with tables. You can pick up picnic foods at the Harvest Ranch Market.

The Race Track
Horse racing season runs every summer from around mid July through mid September. Beware of traffic congestion when the races let out. For more information on the race track, call 858-755-1141.

The Fairgrounds
Every summer for around the last two weeks in June is the annual San Diego County Fair. See sdfair.com for more info.
